Elected a Member of the Royal Society of British Artists 1976

Portrait fascinates me because there are very few situations in life where you are able to observe another person so intensely, visually and to some extent, perhaps psychologically. Landscape, townscape or marine views are demanding because of their constantly changing light, atmosphere and mood. You have no control over that – so choosing to fix a moment – making that decision is endlessly fascinating. Although my work is firmly figurative the abstract nature of light and atmosphere, shape and colour, are a large driving force in my painting.
