Susie is drawn to quiet places in nature. Sunlit trees; reflections in ponds and deep water; wild creatures and plants; these are her subjects. Often, her work is imbued with a wry humour – in an animal’s expression or a pun in the title.
She attended the London College of Printing from 1963-1967. Thereafter she pursued a career as a graphic designer, working with well-known design groups. She is now a printmaker working in etching and aquatint.
My graphics background influenced my early work, which involved exploring print with line and form. Nowadays, I experiment with less predictable techniques, such as photocopying and enlarging to distort and blur textures and shapes. I work almost exclusively in aquatints for the wonderful tonal contrast achievable. I print using multiple plates, which gives a velvety texture and deep colours.
