Born in Stockport, Greater Manchester Carolyn Simpson now resides in London.
Carolyn is a sculptor working predominately but not exclusively in Soapstone, a soft but very dense, heavy stone found in an extensive and subtle range of colours.
The sculpture is on a domestic scale, inspired by nature and intended to be observed and enjoyed within the home.
Carolyn is a member of both the Royal Society of British Artists (RBA) and the Royal Society of Marine Artists (RSMA) and exhibits regularly at the Mall Galleries in London.
I aim to achieve a sculpture that reflects the fluidity and movement of the subject rather than an accurate and realistic depiction. Consequently my work is slightly styalised and simplified. I use exaggeration of line to depict and emphasise flow and movement to capture the essence of the subject.
I have a particular fascination with birds and their flowing movement .I work slowly with hand tools which enables me to respond to the individual piece of stone, utilising it’s specific qualities and patterns to enhance the subject being carved.
My work is generally small in scale to be enjoyed in proximity within the home.
