Born in 1961, David is a London based artist who studied at Canterbury College of Art. After graduating in the early 1980’s he has worked continually as a fine artist, including a brief period as a scene painter at Dreamland Amusement Park in Margate.
He is primarily interested in architectural subjects and how light reveals the nature of its structure, as well as creates mood and atmosphere. His favoured subject matter encompasses everything from Mediterranean landscapes to the urban skyline of London. While his principal medium is oil paint, he also uses watercolour as a means of exploring ideas and making preparatory studies. David has firmly established himself amongst his contemporaries, and his career as an artist has seen great success. He has exhibited in numerous galleries, in the UK and at the Cross Gate Gallery in the USA. He regularly shows at Mall Galleries with the Royal Society of British Artists, and has also exhibited with the New English Art Club, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, the Chelsea Art Society, John Noott and Island Fine Arts.
I would describe myself as a modern British Impressionist, working within the tradition of landscape painting. I am mainly interested in architectural subjects and the effect of light in revealing the nature of its structure and creating a mood or atmosphere. The subject matter I paint encompasses Mediterranean landscapes to London̛̛s urban skyline. My principal medium is oil paint although I also use watercolour as a means of exploring ideas and making preparatory studies. Much of my work, at this time, is on a larger scale as it is increasingly more studio based, using drawings and photographic reference and occasionally small oil studies made in situ.
Generally, I have 5-6 main paintings that I am working on in my studio at one time, as ideas and elements, that I am exploring, move between one piece to another. If I am unhappy with a picture, I will leave it untouched and unseen for a while. Usually on returning to it later, problems can be resolved seeing it in a fresh light. I work between a small studio space in London, where I formulate my ideas and a larger studio in South West France, where I generally paint my larger pictures.
