The Society records with profound sadness the death of Anthony J. Lester, distinguished art critic, author, broadcaster, curator and much-loved Fellow of the Society.
Anthony’s contribution to the RBA was exceptional. He was a loyal friend of the Society, a knowledgeable advocate for its artists and a passionate guardian of its history. Over many years, he assembled an extensive personal archive relating to British artists and exhibitions. He shared this knowledge generously, always willing to answer an enquiry, identify an artist or guide a researcher towards a forgotten source.
For more than fifty years, Anthony devoted his exceptional knowledge and enthusiasm to British art. He wrote extensively about artists and exhibiting societies, contributed to numerous publications and catalogues, and became widely known through his broadcasting and appearances as a picture expert on the BBC’s Antiques Roadshow and Flog It!
Anthony curated several important exhibitions for the Federation of British Artists, including Pure Gold: 50 Years of the Federation of British Artists in 2011, The Art of a Nation in 2015 and Winners: Award Winning Artists 2020–2022. In 2011, he established the Anthony J. Lester Art Critic Award, presented at exhibitions across the Mall Galleries societies, including the RBA Annual Exhibition. The Award reflected his delight in discovering talent and encouraging artists.
With his colourful hats and shirts, Anthony brought warmth and an unmistakable presence to the Mall Galleries. He and his beloved wife, Elizabeth Meek MBE, were among the most familiar and warmly regarded figures at private views.
The Society extends their deepest sympathy to Elizabeth, Anthony’s family and his many friends. We mourn the loss of a distinguished Fellow and a dear and generous friend whose contribution to the RBA and to British art will be remembered with lasting gratitude and affection.
